    About UEFA Nations League:

    History

The UEFA Nations League is a biennial international football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the member associations of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Launched to replace friendly matches with more competitive games, the tournament was introduced to improve the quality and significance of national team football in Europe. The competition also offers teams an additional route to qualify for the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup.

The inaugural edition of the UEFA Nations League began in 2018. National teams are divided into four leagues (A, B, C, and D) based on their UEFA coefficients, with promotion and relegation between the leagues after each edition. Leagues A, B, and C consist of 16 teams divided into four groups of four, while League D contains the remaining teams split into smaller groups. Teams play each other home and away in a round-robin format, typically from September to November in even-numbered years. The group winners in League A advance to the Nations League Finals, which consist of two semi-finals, a third-place play-off, and a final held in June of the following year.

Alongside determining a champion, the Nations League serves as a mechanism for World Cup and European Championship qualification play-offs. Depending on the results in the Nations League, teams can earn a place in these play-offs even if they did not qualify through the traditional group qualification routes. This makes the competition strategically important, especially for mid- and lower-ranked national teams.

Since its inception, the competition has been praised for adding a competitive edge to international breaks and giving emerging nations a platform to improve and compete more regularly. The first Nations League Finals were held in 2019 in Portugal, with the host nation emerging as the inaugural champion by defeating the Netherlands 1–0 in the final. France won the second edition in 2021, beating Spain 2–1 in the final held in Italy. Spain claimed their first Nations League title in the 2023 edition, defeating Croatia in the final after a penalty shootout following a 0–0 draw.

The UEFA Nations League is scheduled to be held every two years, with its fixtures integrated into the international match calendar. The tournament has quickly become a key part of the European football landscape, balancing competitive football with the opportunity for teams to test themselves against similarly ranked opponents in meaningful matches.
